Alexander III
Alexander III was one of the most well known leaders of Ancient Greece, even nicknamed Alexander the Great. He was a Macedonian Prince, but after becoming king he conquered most of the known world which includes the Mediterranean region and the Indus River region. At an early age he studied under the famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle. He was taught things like public speaking, science, philosophy, and the appreciation of Greek culture. After his father was murdered, at age 20 Alexander became king. Some even hypothesize that Alexander III murdered his own father to take the throne.
Alexander invaded and conquered land and expanded, and expanded the land in which he ruled. He burned down towns and cities that resisted him to the ground, and then sold the citizens as slaves. He was cruel and was quoted to be “the oppressor of the world” which meant that he took away the freedom and rights of the people. Alexander claimed that he was a god, the son of Zeus to be exact, whom is known to be the king of the gods. He was said to be selfish and self-centered as he ordered statues and temples to be built honoring his greatness and boasting his achievements, never acknowledging the help and support he had to accomplish such great feats. He even wanted his citizens and slaves to bow down and kiss his feet. He had even killed his friend because he had said the everyone had helped to create the empire of Macedonia. He was so against sharing such a great triumph that he murdered someone who had supported him and had been there for him as his ally and friend.
Alexander III was smart about his ruling as he had conquered almost all of the known world back then. He showed respect for the religion and culture of the lands he conquered and adopted some of the customs. He considered all of the people he conquered to be equal. He used religion to inspire loyalty by honoring Egyptian and Persian Gods and treating the gods as if equal to Greek gods. Alexander cared for injured soldiers families when he killed a soldier from the other side because he didn’t make their family pay taxes. He made Alexandria which is the world’s most important center of trade and learning and contained more that ½ million books. Alexander never lost a war. By the time he was thirty-two years old he conquered the entire Mediterranean region. At age thirty-two Alexander III became ill and died. Alexander III was nicknamed Alexander the Great for his magnificent achievements and the fact that he had conquered and successfully controlled a great amount of land and people.
